It’s spring and it’s time to shear the sheep to collect the wool!<\/p>\n
We shear wool from sheep for several reasons.<\/p>\n
The first one is because for them it is more comfortable to move in summer with less wool. The sheep have been selected to obtain more wool. Formerly, in prehistory, they did not have so much. This wool<\/strong> is what we are going to use to make quilts, pillows, mattress protectors … and everything in a natural<\/strong> and sustainable<\/strong> way.<\/p>\n In the mountain areas the herds go up to the high areas to spend the summer cooler and to be able to enjoy a good pasture in freedom, before going up they will be sheared.<\/p>\n The photo you see shows a sheared in LLesui, town of Pallars (Pyrenees). Here there are about 5,000 sheep among about 12 shepherds. Among them, the Xisqueta sheep, a native breed of the region. It is the same one we use in Pirilana.<\/strong><\/p>\n We have been able to attend several shearing in the region, and it is quite an experience. Different towns in Pallars organize festivities where they show how a sheep is sheared (Xolla). It is quite a festive event and marks the beginning of summer.<\/p>\n A “fleece” is what a sheep’s freshly shorn coat of wool is called and contains various qualities of wool. These different qualities are separated into different bags. The quality of wool depends on factors such as the breed of the sheep, its diet or the climate where it lives.
